Karel Van Hulle

Chair of EMMI Conflicts of Interest Oversight Committee

Karel Van Hulle is an emeritus professor at the Economics and Business Faculty of KU Leuven and an honorary professor at Goethe University in Frankfurt, where he is a fellow of the International Centre of Insurance Regulation (ICIR). He also serves as a non-executive member of the Board of the Bermuda Monetary Authority and as Chair of its Audit and Risk Management Committee.

From 2004 to 2013, Prof. Van Hulle was the Head of Insurance and Pensions at the European Commission (EC), representing the EC in the Board of Supervisors of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) and the Technical Committee of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS). After retiring from the EC, he joined the Public InterestOversight Board, where he served from 2016 to 2021.

Prof. Van Hulle holds a law degree from KU Leuven, where he graduated magna cum laude, and a postgraduate degree in American commercial and corporate law from Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee, USA.
